Inflation Calculator (Singapore Edition)

How to use

This tool helps you see how inflation affects your money — how much more you’ll need in the future to keep the same buying power, and what a future amount is worth today.

  1. Step 1: Enter the Initial Amount
Input the present amount of money you want to test.
Example: Want to know what S$1,000 today will be worth in 10 years? Enter 1000.
  2. Step 2: Enter the Number of Years
Enter how many years ahead you want to project.
    Example: For a 10-year projection, enter 10.
  3. Step 3: Choose the Inflation Rate
Use the slider to pick an expected annual inflation rate between 1.00% and 6.00%.
Singapore’s inflation has historically been in the ~1% to 3% range in many years, though spikes can occur.
Example: Enter 2.00 for 2% inflation.
  4. Step 4: Calculate
Click Calculate. The tool will show you:
    • Future Value (Nominal Amount): How much money you’ll need in n years to maintain today’s purchasing power.
    • Present Value: What a future sum is worth in today’s dollars after adjusting for inflation.
    • Example
      • Initial = S$1,000
      • Years = 10
      • Inflation = 2.00%
    • Results:
      • Future Value ≈ S$1,218.99 (that’s how much you’d need in 10 years to equal S$1,000 now)
      • Present Value ≈ S$820.35 (that future amount is worth this much today)

Understanding the Limits of Our Calculator

  1. Assumes Constant Inflation Rate
We assume the same inflation rate each year. But in reality, inflation fluctuates annually in Singapore
  2. Not an Official MAS Forecast
This tool is for personal planning. It does not reflect official MAS or government inflation projections.
  3. Works Best for Moderate Time Horizons
Projections up to 20–30 years tend to be more realistic. Over very long periods, assumptions may break down.
  4. Focuses on Erosion of Value Only
The calculator shows how inflation erodes money’s value. It doesn’t include growth from investments (returns, interest, etc.).
  5. Tool, Not Guarantee
Use this as a guide to plan. For precise financial or long-term decisions, always consult a licensed financial advisor in Singapore.
